My first gardening goal is to provide habitat for wildlife. I’m fortunate to live in a house surrounded by trees, with a denser strip of woodland on the edges of the property. I’ve watched red-headed woodpeckers, bluebirds, wrens, downy woodpeckers, mockingbirds, jays, and cardinals raise their young. One year we had a family of skunks who toddled out of their underground den every evening, babies following in a line behind mom and dad. We have mature oaks, so hundreds of squirrels—which may be the reason this family moved in. We have a family of foxes nearby. My husband installed a wildlife camera to get a closer look. The photos and videos are delightful—a way to get a closer look at a family we would otherwise rarely see.
