Saying Goodbye to the Past

"Goodbye, past things. Goodbye, old me."  Fumio Sasaki

From 1990-2010, I filed paper statements, cash receipts, and taxes, along with special letters and tickets—in one box for each year. I then stored them and forgot about them.

Last week I sifted through the 1990’s, extracted a few special items, then shredded the rest for recycling.

I wasn't prepared for the emotions brought up by going through old statements and letters. I remembered good times, old friends, and some very tough times. It was hard to shake the negative feelings that clung to past failures and losses.

But springtime turns our minds to thoughts of new life. As wild bees and moths shed their winter cocoons and take flight, I’m shedding the ephemera that has clung to me all these years.

I am becoming new.
