 On Editing My Life

When I was a child, my father was in the military. Since he was reassigned every two years, we moved everything we owned to a new home every two years. We learned to edit our homes, keeping only those items that were necessary or very special. Collecting books, so heavy to pack and move, was especially discouraged. This way of life was normal to me. I never felt a lack. We always lived near a great library, so buying books wasn’t necessary. I had one or two special dolls, and that was all I needed.

Things changed when I grew up and started a family of my own. Suddenly, I was settled into a permanent home. My husband and I lived there for 27 years. Our house had a full basement, a full attic, and a two car garage. We also had two barns. Over the course of 27 years, we managed to fill up all of that space! Now we’re getting close to retirement and it’s past time to downsize. I wake up during the wee hours of the night and wonder, how am I going to do this?

One thing at a time.

Starting with my book collection. . . . . .
